Dear Freshmen of Life Sciences:

I would like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the faculty and students of the Department of Life Sciences to the Class of 2024 freshmen. First of all, congratulations on being admitted to National Cheng Kung University, the most favored university among employers. This achievement is the result of your hard work and dedication over the years. NCKU is a comprehensive university capable of providing outstanding students like you with rich professional training, enabling you to grow and eventually become pillars of society.

You have likely already seen from our website the teaching and research facilities of the department. I would like to further emphasize the future direction of our department, which is based on two core principles: internationalization and industrial application. Internationalization is an important goal of our college. Fortunately, our department has already recruited distinguished Japanese scholars, Professor Omura Takashi from the University of Tokyo and Professor Nakazawa Takeshi from Kyoto University, who are actively contributing to undergraduate education. In terms of industry collaboration, in the future you will be taught directly by PhD-level researchers from listed technology companies or distinguished lecturers with medical doctoral degrees.

We are currently still living in the COVID-19 pandemic environment, and most students are leaving home for the first time. Faced with a colorful and unrestricted university life, safety must always be the top priority. Finally, I would like to quote from the Bible: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal.” Let us become pioneers of 21st-century biology.
